Healthy Eating New Year’s Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

The beginning of a new year is a great time to make healthy lifestyle changes and give up bad habits. When making dietary changes, start small and set yourself up for success with these healthy eating tips:

  1. Have a good breakfast.
Eating breakfast can help jump-start your metabolism. There are plenty of reasons why many health professionals say breakfast is the most important meal. To sustain your energy throughout the morning, try these breakfast ideas:
    1. Oatmeal with nuts and bananas
    2. Whole grain toast with nut butter and fruit
    3. Nonfat Greek yogurt with nuts and berries
    4. Eggs scrambled with veggies like bell peppers, spinach and onions
    5. Whole-grain waffles with sliced strawberries, bananas and a dollop of low-fat or nonfat yogurt
  2. Pack healthy snacks.
Eating regular, healthy snacks helps prevent hunger and cravings, and can help you avoid overeating later. Try healthy snacks between meals like; unsalted nuts, yogurt, smoothies, or hummus.
  3. Keep frozen veggies & fruits in the fridge.
Frozen fruits and vegetables are at their peak of ripeness, easy to use, and readily available. Because frozen produce is prep-free, reaching for it can save you a ton of time, allowing you to make healthy dishes at home fairly quickly.
  4. Bulk up your salad.
A salad can be a filling meal on its own if you include the right ingredients. To upgrade your salad, try adding raw or roasted veggies, grains and nuts, or topping with your favorite protein to keep you full longer.
  5. Meal prep once or twice per week.
Meal prepping or batch-cooking meals ahead of time can make healthy eating easier during your busier days. Knowing you have something waiting in the fridge might make you less likely to swing through the drive-thru for an emergency lunch or dinner. Make sure any recipes you pick are well-rounded and include vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Start simple. Choose meals that are easy to prepare and don’t contain a ton of ingredients.
  6. Drink more water.
Water is essential for the human body, and it is one of the best things that you can drink to improve your health. It helps to detoxify your body, boosts your metabolism, and keeps you hydrated. Try adding fruits to make it tastier, try oranges, lemons, cucumbers, strawberries, and limes.

Making a healthy New Year’s resolution focused on your well-being is an important first step. You don’t have to be perfect, take small steps and remember to celebrate your milestones.
